EVANSTON ART CENTER ANNOUNCES ITS THIRD SHAPE OF NOW RESIDENCY FEATURING KRISTIN MARIANI FROM FEBRUARY 5 – MARCH 2, 2018
The Evanston Art Center (EAC) is pleased to announce its third SHAPE OF NOW Fashion Residency, featuring Kristin Mariani, who will occupy the upstairs Atrium Gallery at the Art Center from February 5 – March 2, 2018.
Kristin Mariani is a Chicago based dressmaker, designer and artist creating works for dance, performance, and installation. In her art and design practice she investigates hidden layers of labor discovered inside found cloth and garments, incorporating physical responses to material that emphasize process, chance, and patience. In 2000, she founded her label Red-Shift; a line of contemporary couture created from salvaged materials and found garments. Her designs have been distributed internationally. She is faculty at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an artist member of The Arts Club, Chicago.
Kristin’s practice is an ongoing discourse between design and art. She acknowledges the unstable distinctions between the two disciplines, and her investigations unfold in this unstable territory, continually questioning how the body is figured through fashion, place, and labor. Her raw material is a by-product of her dressmaking process and comes in parts. Thread is her drawing tool and connective device to reintegrate cloth fragments and garment remnants into coherent visual relationships. Stitching on two-dimensional surfaces enables her to create fronts that reveal what is commonly concealed in the facades of fashion. Structuring a crosshatch of materials to establish a new value for what is typically discarded, she deploys aesthetic strategies and skill-based knowledge to probe the historical, material, and labor-oriented underpinnings encapsulated in any effort to clothe the body.
Katrin Schnabl curates the 2017-18 Fashion Residency at the Evanston Art Center with SHAPE OF NOW, a multi-disciplinary project focused on illuminating the creative process behind the work of multi-disciplinary fashion designers/artists: Abigail Glaum Lathbury, Alex Ulichny, Ayrun Dismuke, Kristin Mariani, a collective composed of Sky Cubacub, Compton Quashie and Jake Vogds, and a collaboration with Anne Guitteau and Katrin Schnabl.
A weeklong opening exhibition in October 2017 introduced the designers, who are subsequently invited to individually take over and work in the 2nd floor studio space for up to four weeks throughout the 2017-18 Season. This will take the form of research, sampling, styling, working with collaborators and/or documenting a phase of their unique design processes. During this time, the designers may elect to host classes, workshops, lectures, topical panel conversations, happenings or presentations. A month-long exhibition in the summer of 2018 will feature the work resulting from their residency. The public will have the opportunity to shop a curated selection of fashion, accessories and objects created by the participating designers at THE FAIR, a unique art-meets-fashion pop-up at the Evanston Art Center in March 2018.
Saturday, February 17: Artist Talk 1:00 pm until 2:00 Kristin will share the work she is developing for the Shape of Now residency in the Atrium Gallery. She will then present a slide lecture to illustrate the flow of raw material in her work, highlighting her interdisciplinary practice as an artist and designer.
Saturday, March 3: Drawing from Fragments 10:00 am until 1:00 pm This workshop focuses on drawing as a by-product of creative production rather than a precursor. Participants will build images based in a free association of fragments (discarded materials) from each student’s creative process, working with a combination of techniques such as ebony rubbing, thread tracing, hand and machine stitching, found object collage, blind drawing, and mono-printing. Students will be given a set of prompts to begin the drawing process, resulting in one to three exploratory drawings. Ages 16+. Registration is required to attend this workshop; visit www.evanstonartcenter.org for more information.
Upcoming residents during the SHAPE OF NOW program include Radical Visibility Collective (Sky Cubacub, Compton Quashie, and Jake Vogds) from March 5 – March 30, 2018, Alex Ulichny from April 8 – May 6, 2018, and Abigail Glaum Lathbury from May 20 – June 17, 2018.
