Merit School of Music seeks a highly qualified candidate for the position of General Music Instructor to start teaching no later than the week of October 8th in our Merit Music in Communities Program. The successful candidate will teach up to 4 hours of weekly general music classes on Thursday mornings for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Additional teaching opportunities may be added to this schedule as more programs are confirmed with Merit’s partners in Chicago Public Schools and other community centers. Since its founding in 1979, Merit School of Music has successfully motivated and inspired over 50,000 young people with high-quality music instruction. The School’s broad-ranging comprehensive curriculum, extensive level of financial aid, sense of community and the standard of excellence set forth by the faculty and students are major components of its success.
Merit offers a multi-leveled, structured curriculum in a college preparatory environment. Programs take place at the Joy Faith Knapp Music Center in Chicago’s West Loop and at nearly 30 locations in neighborhoods across the City. Instruction is offered to approximately 5,000 students of all ages, from infants to adults, and from beginners to the Juilliard-bound by over 150 accomplished faculty members.
Merit has an annual operating budget of approximately $6 million, of which more than half is supported by contributed revenue, with a third coming from earned revenue, including rental income.

The General Music Instructorreports to the General Music Program Director
Responsibilities of the General Music Instructor include, but are not limited to:
Deliver high-quality weekly general music classes to students in Kindergarten – 3rd grade
Use Merit’s curriculum when constructing lesson plans
Complete program and/or student assessments once per year or as requested
Timely correspondence with Merit staff and partner site/school administration
Attend Merit faculty meetings and departmental meetings
Other projects as assigned
This general music program will run early October 2018 through May 2019
Additional general music teaching opportunities may become available throughout the year
$50 per hour plus travel expenses (round-trip mileage as calculated from Merit School of Music)
