Trap Door Theatre was founded in 1994 by Artistic Director Beata Pilch with a commitment to seeking out challenging yet obscure works and bringing them to startling life on stage. Whether it be the European classic rarely seen in the United States, an untarnished piece of American literature, or the playwright living next door, Trap Door will find these voices and present them to the public through innovative expression. Founded in 1990, Trap Door began as a nomadic troupe, thrilling the European theaters of Stockholm, Berlin, Zakopane and Paris with its grass-roots, avant-garde expressionism. The exotic sensibilities that we developed on these low budget, international tours in our beginning continues to flavor our artistic capitol. The complex texts we select are brought to life through our unique and talented company ensemble; Trap Door is inspired by the literature, and driven by the actor. We now produce three to five full length productions per fiscal year. At least one of these works are collaborations with foreign directors that are in residence in Chicago and we regularly tour to Europe to share these collaborations. These practices authenticate our international identity. Our mission is duel focused: Trap Door also seeks to produce world premieres of playwrights from the United States. Our company has collaborated with local directors and playwrights to create original works; Trap Door is a habitat to workshop developing scripts and new artistic initiatives.
